At first glance, each painting seduces with its opulence. The masks gleam with 24ct gold leaf detailing. The feathers, painted with precision, explode in colour. But these aren’t imagined plumages - they belong to some of the world’s most endangered birds. There are currently no breeding pairs of the Spix’s Macaw in the wild. A Stresemann’s Bristlefront, of which it is estimated that there are fewer than 15 remain on Earth. A Dracula Parrot, hunted for its ceremonial value. Their stories are as real as they are fragile.
Through the brushwork of Kate Richardson and the ceramic mastery of Catherine Lucktaylor, this exhibition brings deep meaning and a call to action. It is a celebration of nature’s grandeur and a reckoning with our role in its preservation.
Each artwork tells a tale. Whispers of the Carnival parades twelve endangered species in riotous colour, while Lament of the Dracula holds a more shadowed tone with symbolism of extinction and remembrance. The birds chosen are not mere subjects of beauty, they are heralds of biodiversity loss and ambassadors of ecosystems at risk.
