“The Last Wise Call” (Masquerade Collection)
Selected with intention
Original oil on canvas with 24 ct gold leaf inlay, Kate Richardson
An aura of wisdom pervades this stately creation, its mask echoing the solemn silhouette of a forest-dwelling owl. Adorning the piece are two rare survivors: the Kakapo, the world’s only flightless parrot, depicted in rich moss-green tones, and the elusive Forest Owlet, their painted eyes wide yet unwavering, holding the viewer’s gaze in a haunting final chorus.
Dark, lustrous feathers and the mask’s sharp beak frame the composition, merging natural realism with artistic invention. The mood is dignified and contemplative - a restrained tribute to resilience and rarity. Crafted with meticulous attention, the polished textures and harmonious balance leave space for reflection, inviting reverence for both bird and artistic brilliance.
Artistic Techniques Used: The painting features a matte black background onto which the artist has layered artist-grade oil paints. Fine details were added using 24ct gold leaf, creating a gilded gleam. The foreground is finished in a gloss medium to create a slight 3D effect against the matte background. The painting is protected with multiple layers of MSA varnish, ensuring preservation and longevity. The painting is framed in a distressed black wood frame with 24ct gold leaf inlay, providing an opulent touch and striking contrast.
Dimensions: 89 cm height, 114.5cm width (including frame)
Birds Featured: Kakapo (Strigops habroptilus, Critically Endangered) and Forest Owlet (Heteroglaux blewitti, Endangered).
